Scuba Diving for First-Time and Uncertified Divers
Have you ever wondered what it feels like to breathe underwater? There is no better place to take your first breaths than the tropical paradise of Phuket. With beautifully clear waters, calm, current-free bays, and a vibrant marine ecosystem, Phuket offers the ultimate safe haven for learning to dive.
For safety and to build your confidence, we keep our groups small—never more than two first-time divers per instructor. We offer two distinct, low-pressure paths for beginners: Try Scuba and Basic Diver.
Choosing Your First Underwater Experience
We’ll explain the difference between the Try Scuba and Basic Diver programs so you can decide which of them is best for you.
Try Scuba: Easy, Relaxed, and Zero Pressure

Try Scuba is an informal, pure-fun introduction to the ocean with absolutely no skills required. Your instructor handles all the heavy lifting so you can focus entirely on the magic of swimming with the fish.
- For Kids (Ages 8–9): We host this program in a comfortable, controlled swimming pool to ensure maximum safety and reassurance.
- For Adults & Teens (Ages 10+): We take you straight to our beautiful house reef at Kata Beach or on a scenic island day trip to Racha Noi and Racha Yai.
- No Swimming Required: This program is the ideal choice for non-swimmers and nervous beginners. You get to experience the thrill of breathing underwater up to a safe maximum depth of 5 meters without any test anxiety. Your instructor will be in full control.
Basic Diver: Your First True Stepping Stone
Often called “Discover Scuba” or “Resort Dive,” the Basic Diver program is the perfect “try before you buy” first step toward your Open Water certification. It’s the most popular first-dive program in the world, and it’s the one most divers started out with.
- Dive Deeper: After an informative, relaxed briefing on diving basics, we teach you four foundational exercises in shallow water to build your confidence.
- Explore up to 12 Meters: Once you master the basics, we unlock the deeper parts of the reef down to 12 meters (40 feet), giving you a front-row seat to an incredible variety of marine life.
- Save on Certification: If you fall in love with the ocean (and it’s almost inevitable you will!) and decide to continue, that first dive can count as the first training dive of the Open Water Course. If you have time to continue immediately, we will deduct the entire Basic Diver fee from your certification cost!
- No Pressure: Worried about anything? Don’t! Your instructor will make sure everything’s clear and you go at your own pace. If you’re struggling to complete the skills, no problem! You can skip them: we have the Try Scuba program as a fallback, so there’s nothing stopping you from meeting the fish!
Choosing Your Environment: Beach vs. Boat

The Kata Beach House Reef: Our Top Recommendation
If the weather permits (generally during our dry, sunny season from November to May), we strongly recommend a beach dive. It offers unmatched freedom, comfort, and flexibility.
- Walk Right In: We gear up comfortably on shore and simply walk into calm, waist-deep water where you can stand up at any time.
- Protecting the Ocean: We practice your skills over large, open patches of sand. This lets you perfect your buoyancy without any risk of stepping on or damaging the delicate coral.
- Incredible Marine Life: Our house reef sits less than 100 meters from the shoreline but is packed with underwater life. You will see just as many fish here as on a boat trip—including Nemo (anemonefish), schooling barracuda, snapper, lionfish, and even resting stingrays.
- No Clock Ticking: Best of all, beach dives have zero time limits. We keep exploring for as long as you have air in your tank.
Boat Trip Adventures: Deep Water Exploration

Heading out on a dive boat is an exciting full-day adventure, but it does add a few extra considerations that are helpful to know in advance.
- Jumping into the Blue: Boat dives require you to giant-stride directly into deep water out of your depth. If you are already comfortable in the ocean, it’s a thrill; if you are scared of being out of your depth, the beach dive is a better option for you.
- Time Limits: The boat captain has a schedule to keep to so each dive is capped at 50 minutes, unlike the beach dive which has no time contraints.
- Structured & Reliable: While the boat ride can occasionally be a bit rough during the wet season, the islands themselves always offer perfectly sheltered, calm bays with excellent visibility.
- Three Full Dives: The boat trip treats you to a full-day cruise with three separate dives (up to 40 minutes each), giving you plenty of time to explore the island reefs.
