A rash guard is usually a tight fitting and expandable shirt (loose fit rash guards are becoming very popular in recent years as well) used by scuba divers, snorkelers, surfers & athletes to protect them from the harmful rays of the sun and from the incessant rubbing of their wet suit or BCD shoulder straps on one’s skin. Rash guards are made of stretchy Lycra, neoprene and, in some cases, Spandex, which is light and flexible, making them perfect for scuba diving. Rash guards are also used as an undergarment when wearing a wetsuit to eliminate rubbing or chafing.
Rash guards come in various styles, thicknesses, and fabrics depending on their purpose. Rash guards are used for a number of ocean sports, but the most popular is Scuba diving & surfing.
The primary purpose of a rash guard is to provide protection: they protect the wearer from the UV rays of the sun, heat loss and irritation from the BCD and even jellyfish strings. They can be worn under a wetsuit for rash protection and additional warmth, or by themselves (without a wetsuit) in warmer climates. They are also used with modest swimwear and as additional top coverage. Most are made of Spandex, nylon, polyester, or neoprene. Every rash guard provides at least some UV protection (even if not specifically stated).
There are different rash guards with cuts, specifically for men, women and children. Children’s rash guard sets are commonly used for sun protection. Men’s and women’s rash guards are not only used for scuba diving & surfing but often used for aerobic activities and ocean water sports. So, whether your need is warmth, sun protection, rash protection, or sport-specific, you shouldn’t have a problem finding a rash guard that is perfect for your needs with Oceanic Dive Center.
